| As the sun reaches its highest point and gifts us with the longest day of the year, we celebrate the Summer Solstice, a moment of powerful energy. In East Asian medicine, summer is associated with the fire element and the Heart, the organ that governs joy, circulation, and spirit (Shen). It is also the season of supreme Yang energy, expansive, hot, bright, and active. This energy can make us feel more alive, expressive, and inspired, but it also calls for balance and care as we move through this vibrant time.Tips to Stay Balanced in the Heat of Summer: 1. Hydrate with Intention Summer’s heat can quickly deplete our fluids, especially if we’re active or outdoors. Support your body with room temperature or cool herbal teas, coconut water, and hydrating fruits like: Watermelon 🍉Cantaloupe 🍈Strawberries 🍓Cucumbers 🥒 These foods not only hydrate but nourish Yin and help cool internal heat. 2. Protect the Skin, the First Line of DefenseIn Chinese medicine, the skin is part of the Lung system and acts as a protective barrier against external pathogens. Overexposure to the sun can weaken our Wei Qi (defensive energy). Apply natural sun protection, wear breathable clothing, and avoid intense sun between 11 AM and 3 PM. 3. Align with the Fire Element The fire element invites connection, laughter, movement, and purpose. It’s a wonderful time to socialize, dance, practice qigong, or simply spend time doing things that ignite joy. But don’t overdo it, too much heat can scatter the spirit. Allow space for stillness and reflection, especially in the early mornings or evenings. 4. Support Your Heart Summer is the season of the Heart and Small Intestine meridians. Symptoms like restlessness, insomnia, overheating, or anxiety can be signs of Heart heat or Yin deficiency. Gentle acupuncture, cooling herbal teas (like chrysanthemum or mint), and heart-nourishing herbs can help regulate the system. |
